Bansko, Bulgaria is quickly becoming Bulgaria's most dynamic ski resort, with a long season, typically mid December to mid April, and excellent pistes. Massive investment in the form of a new gondola, drags, lifts and infrastructure has permitted rapid development of ski tracks and runs for all abilities. (Oh and of course we mustn't forget to mention the abundance of mehanas the typical traditional tavernas for "relaxation").
All these facilities together with the local spas and monasteries make Bansko an ideal resort out of the winter season as well, for culture, sightseeing, hiking and mountain biking, whilst also offering tourists a summer jazz festival and development of a golf course.
The town itself has over 120 cultural monuments, together with museum houses, and the most interesting Holy Trinity Church with murals, carvings, and a 30m high bell tower and clock. In addition, the Pirin National Park has been created, covering 27,400 ha, incorporating the highest peaks, silver firs, edelweiss, wild goats, and more than 70 glacial lakes. It comprises all the northern Pirin from the "Predela" pass to the "Popovi Livadi" area to the south, and is now detaild on the World Heritage List
